A Sitemap is a systematic and well organized list of (links) the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Search Engines knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

This helps the entire website CRAWLED by search engines quickly and hence the results should start showing much faster.

There are usually two types of Site-Maps; HTML site maps and XML Sitemaps.

HTML Site Maps
The first type of sitemap is a HTML page listing the pages of your site - often by CATEGORIES, SUB-Categories or sections - and is meant to help users find the information they need without browsing the entire website.

XML Sitemaps
XML Sitemaps - usually called Sitemaps are a way for your website to give Google information about your website.

• Your site is new and has few links to it. (Search Engines crawl the web by following links from one page to another, so if your site isn't well linked, it may be difficult for search engines to identify those pages and index them).
  • Sooner the pages get indexed sooner the SEO results start showing.
• Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all.
• Websites that are dynamic and are updated more frequently need updated Sitemaps for those new pages to get indexed as soon as possible.

Sitemaps provide additional information about website to the search engines, complementing their normal methods of crawling the web. It helps them crawl more of your site and more frequently.
